system restore, "fatal system error" message

i'm trying to perform a destructive recovery so i can reformat my hard drive
and start from scratch. it acts like it's going to do it and then the screen
flashes and goes to a screen where i get a "fatal system error" message. it
tells me that the system must shut down and all i can do is turn off my
computer. i was told that it may be my printers and added hardware that have
been installed since i bought it. after taking everything i've ever put on
including memory, gpu, etc., i get the same message. how do i fix this? the
only thing i can think of is the fact that i installed a new os (sp2), which
may have somehow changed the partition on my hard drive that contains the
recovery disks.

You haven't provided enough information, and what you have provided is a bit
confusing.

Firstly why are you trying to do destructive recovery? What are the
problems you're trying to remedy? Second what is the system and how are you
trying to do this? What exact steps do you follow to do this recovery, and
what happens in each step.

Is there any other text to this "fatal system error" message? An error
code? What is the format of it?

What do you mean that you "installed a new os (sp2)"? When, how, why?

Lastly you state that this installation, "may have somehow changed the
partition on my hard drive that contains the recovery disks". Are you just
guessing here? There are no "recovery disks" on the hard drive. Some
systems come with a partition, hidden or not, with an image of the drive as
received from the factory. Is this what you are referring to?

Have you contacted the tech support for the computer for assistance?
