Fatal error message during upgrad 98 to 2000 professional

Have made several attempts to upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Professional
addition, utilizing a Windows upgrade CD.

The upgrade process proceeds properly until the progress screen indicates
approximately 85% completion of upgrade.

At that point the following fatal error message appears:
Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Techinical Support.
I am unable to provide a product identification number since the 2000
version is not loaded on a system, thus the tech support route has been
unscessful.

Have considered that a complete clean format and system load may be necessary.

Suggestions and ideas would be sincerely appreciated.

A clean installation is your best option. Win98 and Win2000 are
completely different beasts, and if you upgrade from one to the
other then you are likely end up with a mediocre compromise.
You also inherit whatever battle scars Win98 has suffered during
its existence.

I did check the Windows software and hardware support site and I was unable
to locate all of the software and hardware items on the compatibility list.
Most of items were located and were compatible, but there is a definite
possibility that the items not found could be a problem.

Everything is backed up. Am thinking in terms of possibly uninstalling
everything except the 98 operating system and attempting the upgrade via CD
again. If that doesn't work, I will be on to formating the partition and
loading 2000 Professional on form scratch.

Thank you for your coments. Served to reinforce pretty much what I was
contemplating.

I my response to Bob I., I indicated that everything is backed up and I plan
to uninstall everything except the 98 operating system and attempt to upgrad
via the 2000 Professional CD.

If that comes to no avail, I will follow your suggestion, which is probably
where I will end up, to be sure I have a good clean installilation.

Though I would attempt the upgrade CD just to see what happens.

Thank you for your input, it reinforces my decisions to move on toward a
probable new, clean install.
