I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop that came with Windows 98 and I'm trying
to upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional. Everything seemed to be going well
when the following message appeared on an all blue screen:

***Stop:0x00000024 (0x001902E,0xF9036D0,0x8046B1E3)
NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

*** Address 8046B1E3 base at 804000000, DateStamp 3dd6c002 - ntoskrnl.exe

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or
technical support group.

I would be grateful for any constructive advice that anyone would care to
offer. Thanks in advance.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting Win2K? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx)

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are Win2K device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet Win2K's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. Win2K, like WinNT before it, is quite sensitive to
borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard
drives) that will still support Win9x.

Bruce,

Thank you for your helpful advice. The system is now working ok. The
Dell Inspiron 3800 is in fact designed for Windows 2000 Professional,
Windows NT Workstation as well as Windows 98.

One interesting note: in order to get out of the blue screen syndrome,
the shut off button had to be continuously pressed for ~ 6-8 seconds. Just
normal quick press and release wouldn't turn off the machine.
