fast user switching

I can't turn fast user switching on. When I check it in the window for
"Change the way users log on" and then exit and come back the X is gone.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2, on a computer with
256 MB memory. I have read the articles in the MS KB and none of the
prohibiting conditions seem to apply to this computer.
I think this behavior may have started when I recently installed SP2, but I
am not sure. Fast user switching was certainly working before I installed
SP2, but I am not sure if it stopped working when I did that (about a month
ago) or later.
Thanks for any ideas.
