Failure to respond during shutdown- Vista Home

Hi all.
I've have recently purchased a new laptop already installed with Windows
Vista Home Premium. I have been using the product for about a month without
any problems but now it seems my PC will not shutdown properly. On choosing
Shutdown/restart the PC goes to the blue shutdown screen but never any
further and fails to respond to any keyboard actions. I have left the PC for
3 days solid on one occasion to see if it just needed the time. Obviously it
doesn't, it just goes to sleep then resumes the failing shutdown. The only
way I have found to turn the PC off is to remove the battery on the back.
When restarting (either in safe mode/normally) the problem persists.
I have run a full anti virus scan and there doesn't appear to be a problem.
Shall I just back up my data and start again?
I will be very appreciative of any suggestions.

I have had this happen as well, it goes to the bluegreen Vista screen where
it says "logging off" then "shutting down", but the little circle keeps
spinning and the screen keeps saying "shutting down" but doesn't change or
completely shut down. The only way to get your laptop operating again is to
remove the battery or unplug and let the battery drain down till it shuts
off. This cleared up for me after running chkdsk error checking on the OS
drive.

Yes that's exactly what happens: the circle spins and it says "shutting down"
indefinately. I'll give ur advice a try. Thanks a lot! :)
