F-Prot for DOS updater problem

Anyone else having problems today using Art's F-Prot Updater?
I keep getting the following error message:
Failed: bad file descriptor.

Checking alternative methods I find that access to ftp.f-prot.com is
impossible. Is the server just down or has the address changed? I see that
files can be found at ftp://www.f-prot.com/pub for manual downloading.

Try again. It just worked ok for me.

Still doesn't work for me, Art.
Updater keeps trying 204.118.102, 204.118.23.103 and 204.118.23.101
but each produces the error "Failed: bad file descriptor".

Possibly there may be a problem with the route from my ISP in the UK .
I'll try again tomorrow.

That should be 204.118.23.102 etc of course.

Feel free to contact me if you contine to have a problem. I haven't
heard from users in different geographical locations concerning
problems communicating with the primary FSI site. If there's an
alternate site that many users in a particular area prefer, I'd
certainly consider creating an option. The primary FSI FTP site has
long been working consistently well for me here in the eastern U.S.

Also, I don't know the current status of Bob Green's updater. It
affords optional site selections, I believe.

I got that a couple of months ago. I forget whether what I did was delete
the contents of the directory and unzip a recent backup, or just started
afresh with FP-UP downloading the program again. One or the other. Either
way it worked.

Thanks for your reply, Art. I am still unable to connect to
ftp://ftp.f-prot.com from my regular ISP. However, I have tried using a
different ISP and a connection is made. Clearly the problem is with my ISP,
Ntlworld, and I will complain to them but from previous experience this
will take some time to sort out!

Optional site selection would be a very useful feature. Can you provide a
link to Bob Green's updater?

TIA,
Terry

Art,
Here is the essence of my problem. My ISP uses a number of Inktomi servers
around the country for dial-up. The one that I am connected to by default
is at present very unreliable and cannot connect to ftp.f-prot.com although
it can connect to www.f-prot.com. For web browsing I can simply set the
proxy server setting to an alternative server. However, using your F-Prot
Updater and similar software it is impossible to select a proxy server.
As a temporary workaround I have made a hosts file entry which sends
requests for ftp.f-prot.com to one of the addresses of www.f-prot.com and
everything works fine.

Is there any possibility of putting a proxy server selector at the front
end of your FP Updater? Alternatively, can you suggest any simple software
which would do this?

Actually, I was hoping to flush out either Bob or someone using his
updater. He's now working for a slavedriver (himself) so he isn't much
into suppling or supporting freeware :) OTOH, I think perhaps versions
of his updater are in use and working for some people (who don't need
support).

Clever, but you won't know that for sure until there's a version
update. Differences in sites can cause problems with the parsing and
identification routine of the updater. What's the IP number of the www
site that seems to work for you?

It's not that simple because of the problem I mentioned above. If I
were to go back to offering site options (been there and done that :))
I'd do it in the updater design, one way or another.

I think the best thing for now if you want to pursue this with me, is
for you to send me a email (it's artnpeg at epix dot net) with a list
of sites by IP number that you can reach reliably. I can then take a
look at their compatibility with the current parsing routine, etc. If
a alternate site looks good, I'll consider creating a option in some
fashion. Ok?

I take your point. I hope there will be more DOS version updates!

That's great. It's in your mailbox.
