It's not as effective as KAV or McAfee but more effective than other
free AV programs (except maybe those based on the KAV engine...not
enough info on them). Unfortunately, it does not work well on NTFS.
It will work if you try to scan a particular file or folder but if
you try to scan the whole disk, the scan will be incomplete and you
might miss infected files. The best use for XP, would be to have it
scan specific files (e.g., email attachments or downloads). If you
want, a free on-access AV, try Avast..it has had the best detection
rates among other free options (even though detection tests are not
consistent and depend on the samples used, etc.). However, even
avast does poorly (detection rates range from 70-85%). So, it's a
good idea to supplement your on-access AV with a couple of additional
on-demand scanners. For that, I would suggest F-prot DOS to scan
individual files (as described above), the free Escan (KAV
based...very good but has a nag screen on exit to buy the full
version), and Ewido (has on-access for 14 day trial and then becomes
a "free" version with on demand scanning only). If you use Avast,
fprot for individual files, and do full scans with the other two
regularly, you will have a fairly good level of protection...

You could try Tech-Protect:

http://www.tech-pro.net/techprotect.html

It is based on F-Prot but this should work with 2K/XP and NTFS.

Very interesting find, anyone tried it yet?

"The Virus Monitor tab controls Tech-Protect Monitor, which checks files
for viruses when they are opened or run using the Windows shell, and checks
files as they are written to disk (under NT-based versions of Windows.)"

A freeware onaccess AV based on f-prot?

From the site:

reportedly, the F-Prot for Dos scanner may hang when scanning some
folders on drives formatted using NTFS. We have not experienced this,
but F-Prot's developers acknowledge that such problems may occur, and
don't claim that F-Prot for Dos can be used under NT-family operating
systems;

it does not support integration with the Windows XP Security Center
(new in SP2.)
