AV Defs Updater: Correct behaviour detects *unreleased* F-PROT for DOS 3.15a

Overself Research

Currently, customers of AV Defs Updater for DOS will experience
repeated messages that their locally installed version of F-PROT for
DOS is older than the newly available version. After they get the
newest 3.15a available from
http://files.f-prot.com/files/dos/f-prot.zip, the next update check
will inform that the installed version is 3.15 and the newest is
still... 3.15a.
Is that a bug? No. It turns out that while both F-PROT for Windows
3.15a and 3.15b have indeed been released, F-PROT for DOS 3.15a does
not exist, and the main download link on FRISK Software,
http://files.f-prot.com/files/dos/f-prot.zip, is currently pointing to
version 3.15, the latter containing antivirus definitions from June
this year.
We have contacted FRISK Software and asked them to urgently correct
the published version information on their website, so that 3.15a is
reverted to 3.15 for the DOS version of F-PROT.
Once they revert the version, users of AV Defs Updater will no longer
get the abovementioned message.

If you have more questions or comments, please send them to
(e-mail address removed).

NOTE for users for F-PROT for Windows
-------------------------------------

Now you can also use this small utility with F-PROT for Windows, not
only F-PROT for DOS. The utility includes an update scheduler that you
can use as an alternative to the schedule of the latter, e.g. to
achieve totally quiet updates. This is "unofficial" functionality,
added in the latest builds of version 2.1 of the utility, and no
separate version was announced, so if you had 2.1 already, and the
*commercial* version of F-PROT does not get updated, please download
the latest installation package of 2.1 from
http://www.overselfresearch.com/software/downloads/avdefsupdaterfprotdos/.

F-PROT for DOS 3.15a is now really available on F-PROT's website (not
just FRISK Software's webpage stating that). If you suspect that you
may have 3.15 or are getting a recurring message in AV Defs Updater
that you need to update to 3.15a, get 3.15a (this time the real one)
from http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_user/download_fpdos.html.
Delete your local F-PROT for DOS installation and unpack the new
version.
To ease the process, in Windows you can click Start->AV Defs Updater
for F-PROT for DOS->Configuration and Manual Update->Go to the
official site of F-PROT for DOS to install the AV engine, and your
local F-PROT installation directory and the official site are both
going to automatically open for you. Just remember to delete all the
files in the local directory before you unpack the real 3.15a version
or at a minimum delete all files with the .NEW extension if any exist.
If you get the problem again during a future release of F-PROT for
DOS, contact (e-mail address removed) ASAP. A possible avoidance
of that problem in the future would be to host on our side the F-PROT
version information that is retrieved by AV Defs Updater
(http://www.overselfresearch.com) -- currently it is kindly hosted and
controlled by the makers of F-PROT, as it must be in the ideal case.
If hosting on our side becomes necessary to avoid future problems of
that kind, we'll do it.
