Today this program updated, then the virus protection turned itself
off. Now says Engine Version: Missing and Virus Signature Update:
Missing. But when I click on manual update, it says I have the latest
version. I NO LONGER have virus protection!!!!!

Yes, but you have the LATEST VERSION of no virus protection! :)

It acted almost as if there might have been something nasty in this
morning's 9639 download.

Tis a problem with this AV program. I've had it before and was able to
disable all options, reboot, reenable the options, reboot, and it was active
again. Sometimes that works, usually not, so most of the time I have to
uninstall and reinstall the program to get it working again. After the 4th
time (averaging about once every 2 months), I uninstalled it again and got a
different AV program. CA could never discover why their product was getting
disabled.

My guess is that there are (hundreds of) thousands of EZ Antivirus users
struggling to get their virus protection up and running again. Computer
Associates and EZ Antivirus really blew this big-time. I'm starting to
see many other reports around the Internet about EZ Antivirus--- I wonder
if Computer Associates will make the news (in a rather negative way)
this morning (Feb 3).

Also from my other thread if you missed it:

Based on the reports I am seeing around the Internet, it looks like Computer
Associates and their E-Trust anti-virus download sites got either hit or
infected this morning (Kama-Sutra???) as many folks are complaining that
they cannot update AND the updating services turning their real-time
scanning engines off, etc, etc, etc. Their website (which is always a
hodge-podge mess to begin with) and help sites were running very slow when
they were running at all and a friend tells me he was unable to get through
on real-time chat with them after his java window reported there were 257
people waiting ahead of him for a rep to come online!!! After waiting four
hours, he gave up. Their phone lines were also busy or unreachable during
the daytime. What a mess.

I updated on 2/2 and again this morning (2/5), and got a
huge download,
can't remember exactly, but 4 digits in the KBs.
Would that indicate that they fixed the problem, at least
for this time,
or was that the 'update' that caused the problem?
I went in and checked all the settings, and got green checks
at
the default settings. If those are *real* then I think I'm
probly ok.

It sounds like you got the new engine in your download which is why it
was so big. If you double click the tray icon, and go to Help, the
engine version should say 12.4.1 and the Virus Signature Update should
be 2064 or higher (mine is 2066 since there was an update today, 2/6).

If all the above checks out, then you are most likely fine.

All numbers above checked out...<sigh>
