extracting files from command promt

The O/S will not load and it is dew the a bad hard draive. What i am trying
to do is extract certin files from the hard drive in command promt by booting
the computer from the CD.but i cant fint the commands to get to these files
and save them. can anyone help me with this problem?

Boot in Safe Mode and then navigate to the file.
Start>All Programs>accessories>Command Prompt

type dir /s filename here and it will tell you the location then use cd
dirname\subdirname then the copy command
