How to Change "Host Name" in Windows IP configuration C: promt wi

I have an IDE hard drive partitioned into two drives of equal size 40 gigs
each, I recently installed a new video card NIVIDA GeForce 7300 GT, with the
purpose of runing a dual monitor setup. I ran into complications with the
video card, I found out that the problem was the on-board video was not
dissabled, after dissabling it in the BIOS menu the video card runs without
complication. Although this was not disscovered until after the computer shop
tried many hours to solve the problem resulting in the purchase of a new SATA
hard drive wich was installed by the shop. Now the problem is when I choose
to boot from the SATA drive I'am unable to conect to the internet. I have
traced this problem to the "Host Name" in the C: promt. The SATA drive uses a
name installed by the computer shop. My IDE drive list a diffrent "Host Name"
in the C: promt. When i try to connect on the SATA drive I recive a messeage
saying my password or sign on name is not recognized by the host. My IDE
drive doesnt have this problem and I can connect with no complications, so I
think if I can change the "Host Name" in the C: promt window it will correct
my problem. I have tried every combination of options possible in the
"control panel" internet options and connections" menus. I have not transferd
all of my files from the IDE drive to the SATA drive as of yet, reason being
I want to be able to connect to the internet before I move those files. I
have transfered my settings with the "File transfer wizard" but this didnt
correct the Internet problem. When i use the SATA drive as the primary drive
to boot the system the IDE drives are recognized as just storage they cant
run system changes. I would return to the computer shop but I live in Taiwan
and now is a long holiday and the technician who worked with me is traveling
for a few days, so im stuck with my own knoledge wich is limited trial and
error as I have no professional computer training. Thanks for any help and
step by step instructions are greatly appreciated.

On the Start Menu, right-click My Computer and click Properties on the menu that
appears.
In System Properties, click the "Computer Name" tab.
Click the "Change" button, to re-name the computer.
In the Computer Name box, type in the name you need to have for the Host Name, then
click OK all the way out.

Do you mean the volume label, the descriptive name applied to the drive?

I'm not so sure of that. I think you may be confusing the volume label of
the drive with the ISP host. These items are not related.

On the occasions that hardware verification is used, it's usually the MAC
address of the network adapter, not the drive label. Cable modems used to
work this way.

The term "host" in the message "my password or sign on name is not
recognized by the host" refers to the ISP's login server, and should have
nothing to do with the volume labels of the computer you're using.

I expect that you are simply not supplying the correct username and password
combination, and the ISP's server is refusing to let you in because of this
simple reason.

The IDE drive works because the username/password combination you have on it
is correct, and the SATA install doesn't because you haven't transferred
that setting correctly to the SATA drive's Windows installation.

How do you connect - via DSL, dialup, cable modem, or what?

You won't get in until you do have the correct username and password. If
you don't know them and can't recover them, you'll need to call the ISP to
get that information.

What you could do is to restart with the IDE drive, then go through the
login process. The username will probably be displayed during the sign-in,
and you should carefully write that down. The password will not be
displayed for security reasons.

Now, go to the ISP's site, log in to your account there, and reset your
password to something new. Write it down. Log out, and log back in with
the IDE drive using the new password to verify. At this point, if it
fails, you would have to contact the ISP to re-reset the password. They
usually are unable to tell you what it currently is, but can reset it and
tell you the new one. They will encourage you to immediately sign in and
change the password again.

Now, restart with the SATA drive and use that username and the new password
when connecting. You should be able to log in with no problems.

Re-reading the original post, I think you may be correct, Patrick. It would help if
the OP described exactly what message he gets, and what type of connection it is.
