Extra Directories

C

Charles

Apparently from updates or program installs I have seven off directories
added to my C drive with meaningless long names such as chtgs8uelumsksks.
Inside these directories are typically a subdirectory named update and
inside the subdirectory is a log files that says "CoSetUp: Entering CoSetUp:
Leaving"

Can I delete these directories? Why are they there?
Thanks

Reboot and delete them if you can.
Temporary directories that sometimes get left behind due to various reasons.

These are temporary files and folders that some applications and Microsoft
updates fail to clean up (remove) after the installation process has
completed. They are safe to delete.

I wondered about this post because I have found some similar directories on
my E: drive

I found using dir under cmd to list the directories on E: a bit strange (it
didn'tl behave as usual) but I managed to get this result

Volume in drive E is Secondary Drive
Volume Serial Number is 101D-072D

The amd64 and i386 combo folder has been noted alot on these boards.
IMO it seems to be some poor cleanup on a MS update.

The MSOCache folder is the MS Office updates. I have deleted it and had
no problems running office but I had an update that for some reason
wanted something out of the MSOCache folder. Since it was missing it
failed to do the update. It was years ago and ever since I just leave
it in. Its not that big. 1/2 gig on mine.

The files are located on your E: drive because
a number of updates from Microsoft create
temporary folders and as part of the install process
your hard drives are scanned and the drive or partition
having the most free space is used to create the
temporary folder.

Now more specifically the AMD and I386 folders are
temporary files that .NET Framework Service Pack 1
failed to clean up (This happens as far as I know on all
computers when .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed)

For more information on this see:
"NET Framework 3.5 SP1 - Temporary Folder is not deleted"
http://www.pagestart.com/netframework35sp1error.html

The MSOCache is part of your MS Office install and
"IS NOT" a temporary folder, leave it on your PC or
you may find yourself being prompted to insert the
Office CD.

The first set of directories are okay to delete however, the MSOCache folder
is another matter. For instance, you are using the scanner tool and want to
use OCR (Optical Character Recognition to extract text form a scanned image
of a document). In that case, Office will ask if you want to 'install'
OCR>? and after answering 'yes' just goes to this MSOCache folder to install
it. But, if you have deleted the MSOCache folder then you WILL have to
provide the Office cd-rom in order to proceed with the installation. There
are many components of MS Office that are only available through further
installation procedures and most can be completed WITH the MSOCache being
still present.
