Deleting or renaming directories in Windows Explorer

I have encountered a strange and frustrating problem when trying to delete or rename subdirectories (mostly containing jpeg or avi files. If I view these files and on the basis of their content decide to rename the subdirectory in which they are contained an error message appears indicating denied access and suggesting that either the hard drive is full (which it is not) or the files in the subdirectory are still open (which they are not). Even when I close all directories and re-open the directory in question the same error-message appears. Only by re-starting the computer is it possible to rename the directory. I cannot remember encountering such a problem with Windows 98 or 95. Has anyone any suggestions?

Hi,

Very common issue in XP. Workarounds:

Remove AVI Search - File in use Error Message (Line 74)

Error Deleting File or Folder - Cannot delete (filename): Cannot find the
specified path. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.
Workaround:

Right click the Recycle Bin/Properties/Check: Do Not Move Files to the
Recycle Bin...
