External hard drive

I had a 200 gig external hard drive and used it as a backup for both of my
systems (Xp home W/sp2 and XP pro W/sp2) for about one year. Just recently
the hard drive started to make some weird noise, after hearing it for a
little bit I unplugged it from the USB port and turned off the power. After
letting it come to a stop I turned it back on and found out it would not show
up in explorer I also checked computer management under administrative tools
and the drive did not show up there either. I assumed the drive may have been
damaged so I replaced the drive in the external case with a new 160 gig drive
already formatted. Now when I plug the drive into the USB port is says that
it found a new mass storage device but it still does not show up anywhere. It
also does the same thing on both computers. I even uninstalled all of the USB
devices under the device manager. After rebooting still the same. I am lost
any help would be great.
Thanks Kirk

You should have used the safely remove hardware (USB) so
that the drive would be closed properly.
The new drive must be formatted and assigned a drive letter
using disk management.
You should be able to recover the data on the old 200 GB
drive, but suggest that you contact DriverSavers website for
advice if the data is vital. They have free FAQ and can
advise before you do something and really mess up the data
while trying to recover the directory structure. Was the
drive FAT or NTFS?

At this point I formatted the new 160 gig drive on another computer using
partition magic 8 I formatted it NTFS. It still does not show up in disk
management. I also tried the drive with a different external case but still
the same problem

Maybe you have damaged the driver for the USB port, use
device manager to remove the port and reboot to reload the
drivers and clear the prior memory assignment to that port.
