External Hard Drive

My external hard drive shows in device manager and computer management, but
it does not show in my computer. Therefore I can't back up to the external
drive. I have WIN Vista 64 bit.
How can I correct this?

Go to "Disk Management", format it, and make sure
it has a drive letter?
