be gentle with me cos i'm a total rookie. My laptop died so i took the 20gb
hdd out and bought a casing for it, and linked it to my desktop, because i
have loads of photos stored on it. i think it should be plug and play, but
nothing happens. the device doesn't appear in the "my computer" area under
hard drives, as i'd expect. i'm running xp home. please help

craggyjohn:
1. When you say your laptop *died", is there any possibility that the 20 GB
drive you subsequently removed from that laptop is "dead" also? What caused
the laptop's "death"? The obvious question is - Are you sure your HD is
without defect?

2. We'll assume it's sound, OK? About that "casing" you bought for the 20 GB
drive and which you used to "link" that drive to your desktop machine. Are
you referring to a USB external hard drive enclosure into which you
installed that 20 GB drive?

3. Assuming that's what it is - you're pretty sure you've connected it
properly to a working USB port on your computer (*not* a USB hub
connection)?

4. Are you familiar with XP's Disk Management utility (Start > right-click
My Computer > Manage > Computer Management > Disk Management)? Any info
there on your 20 GB drive? Think the problem may be that a drive letter
hasn't been assigned to it by the OS? If so, maybe you could do so in DM,
yes?

5. Assuming you're still having problems with the OS recognizing that drive,
could you install it as a secondary internal drive in your desktop and see
what's what? If you do that, you'll make sure you've connected and jumpered
it properly, right?
