Explorer/Search auto starts an Office install

S

SteveW

Been usings w2k for a few months, and I have office 2000 installed.

For some reason when startsing Search from Explorer, Windows Installer
kicks in and tries to run configure something in Office 2000
It then says that the feature that Im trying to use is on the CD
I have the CD - but hadn't asked for any new features

If I cancel the install, it repeats sometimes up to 20 times.

Any ideas how to stop it ?

Hey SteveW,

Using MS Office 2003 SP2 over here and we are running into the same
kind of problem. This last I checked (doing a search on Google a
couple of weeks ago) some other people were having the same problem
with no definate solutions being proposed. What I do now to stop it
is to simply disable Windows Installer in the services (Control
Panel->Administrative Tools->Services, look for "Windows Installer" in
list->Right-click goto Properties and set Startup type to "Disabled"
then Stop the service.). This should resolve the issue. Make sure
that you remembered you disabled it becuase all programs that install
via Windows Installer and Microsoft Update will not work with it
disabled.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, it still tries to do something - but obviously the
install fails and the 20 or so pop-ups, just disappear on their own
very quickly - I can live with that.

About a couple of weeks ago I stopped Automatic updates on Windows,
but I can't think of anything else in that sort of area that I've
done.

Interesting to see how the others get on.

aside - I stopped the automatic updates, as something kept coming in
and downloading updates - as seen in sys tray. (I wanted notification
before install of updates)
But I couldn't find what was running, right-click on the icon did
nothing etc etc - I cut the internet link.

maybe something hadn't finished... - but I know I've used search
between then and now - so maybe not :)

cheers for the working fix

Hey SteveW,

Yeah, thats basically the thing that happens over here, it starts to
do the old thing trying to install something, then quickly fails and
goes away. That is the best solution I have found to date.

I am glad it worked for you as a "fix".
