Explorer Hangs/freezes

Hi all,

I've recently installed Windows Vista (Ultimate, 64bit) on my new PC. Specs:

Intel E660 DC Processor
2GB Branded RAM
Asus P5B Motherboard
Nvidia 8800 PCI-E graphics Card.

Everything was working fine for the first few days, but suddenly
Explorer.exe would suffer massive pauses. I am unable to browse any explorer
windows, or use the start bar, however all other programs work perfectly if I
just alt+tab to them.

It really is a very basic set up, I only use it to play one game, and use
voice coms, there is no other software installed on the workstation. When I
am playing the game, I never notice the system freezes because it only
affects Explorer, however when I tab out and try to browse an Explorer
Window, the problem is loud and clear.

This isn't a performance issue, of that I am 100% certain, but it is driving
me NUTS. Even downloading files is a pain because trying to choose a save
location can take up to a minute.

When I check Task Manager, there is nothing out of the ordinary.

Have you tried a system restore to when things were working?

Another thing to try is running Sfc /scannow from an elevated command
prompt.
