EXPLORE.EXE HAS GENERATED ERRORS

Hello, I'm getting the "explorer.exe has generated errors, a log file
will be produced error" on a Windows 2000 SP4 Dell. The MS KB articles
talk about removing Norton Clean Sweep but I don't have that program
installed. All my virus programs and ad programs come up clean.

This is my kid's computer and the have AOL IM and some file sharing
programs on it. I don't remember ever having this problem before these
programs were installed. Unfortunatley, I don't have msconfig to
disable startup programs to see if it doing this stops the error.

At times the errors come one right after the other. You click OK, the
desktop goes blank, then refreshes, and you are OK until the error box
comes up again, maybe a minute later. The Dr. Watson log file got up to
83 meg before I deleted it. The error came again, of course - here's
the beginning of the Dr. Watson log file:

Microsoft (R) Windows 2000 (TM) Version 5.00 DrWtsn32
Copyright (C) 1985-1999 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved.

Application exception occurred:
App: explorer.exe (pid=860)
When: 12/29/2005 @ 17:32:31.872
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Does this ring a bell?

I tried putting my original W2K disk in for a reinstall but since I'm
up to SP4 it won't let me do a reinstall without wiping everything out.
Ouch. I'm trying to avoid that.

Any info will be really appreciated.

MSCONFIG.EXE
http://www.gwynfryn.co.uk/downloads/msconfig.zip

Unzip the file and place them in your system path (i.e.; c:\winnt)

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try the above but I now have
another piece of info. It turns out the C: partition was completely
full. Sometimes my kids install software without telling me, and they
always accept the defaults. My C: partition is 10Gig. I have two
others that are each over 40Gig. My thought was to only put the OS on
C:, but with the kids installing stuff there it's now full. I had to
move the swap partition to F:, which is NTFS and I hated to do it but
had no choice (C: is FAT32) - that was the only way, short of
uninstalling, reinstalling, to free up half a gig.

I'm wondering now if that may have been at least part of the problem.
I beleive we got the explorer.exe error again after a reboot, but it
only came one time, not mutltiple times. I'll have to check it when I
get time.

For the future, it might be worth asking posters to make sure their
drives aren't maxed out, as a matter of course. I know I'll be asking
that when I help others, for sure.

For when you have finished formatting C: and re-installing OS as eventually you
must - how about taking away the write facilities on Drive C:, that should I
expect stop the kids installing on C: drive and then do not tell them the
Administrator Password.

I had the error for some 3 weeks some time back in April. Eventually I had to
give in and re-install. Quite a pain but if you go my way you will purchase
Acronis and keep images on DVD or maybe on a USB spare disk of about 200GB
You can then format and load the image in about 10 minutes.
