Need help. Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows.

Everytime I log on to my Windows 2000, this message appears and keeps
me from doing my work. "Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by windows."
I did try to fix it using suggestions like removing IE6 and upgrading
to SP4. I don't have clean sweep installed but have Norton Anti-virus
and firewall.
In addition, this problem does not appear when I log on as a different
user. What gives? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Try an online virus check.
www.antivirus.com or http://securityresponse.symantec.com

If you don't find anything do this...
Start
Run...
"type" CMD /K <enter>
"type" CD\ <enter>
"type" SFC /SCANNOW
"type" CHKDSK /V
restart and see if you still have the problem...
If you do
check back and you may need to do a "repair" install and if
that does fix it, you may need to do "inplace" upgrade
installation.
And if that doesn't do it, get ready to Format and Clean
Install. You will need to completely erase your HDD, so get
all data off.

Don, thanks for the tips, but it did not fix it. Aside from
reformatting and reinstalling Windows, can anyone out there give
another solution? Thanks in advance.

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I too have been going through the same thing. Bought a new hard drive, formatted it and bought a new OS disk (Win2000Pro w/SP4). Reinstalled all of my hardware and software. The last software installed was McAfee Security Center 6. A few restarts after the last software package was installed, I started getting the "Explorer.exe generated errors..." message.

If anyone has a fix out there, I'd sure be interested. It's obviously not the software or a virus. I did not go online until the McAfee software was installed as it includes my antivirus software.

Please respond to my email address. Thanks in advance.

Try uninstalling McAfee and see if you get the same problem.
