Excessive Scan Times

It's common sense that the scan times will be higher when the option "scan
inside archives" is checked. On my system, the scan times were only slightly
higher, quite tolerable. However, I observed that the scan time on another
computer seemed to be quite excessive for an old version of Microsoft Encarta
(2003). This is a very big folder (1.95 GB), but the interesting thing is
that it took literally seconds without using "scan inside archives" and
almost 20 minutes with the option turned on. I think any version of Encarta
would make an ideal test case and of course Encarta is readily available to
Microsoft. My observations are that WD in general goes very fast and its
speed is consistent with other Anti-spyware and Virus scanner programs. On
the issue of excessive times for custom scans, I am not debating that a quick
scan is performed before the custom file is analyzed. However, even taking
the worst case custom scan times into account, the total time indicates that
something else is going on. I am going on record that I will not pursue scan
times anymore. Done.

You aren't alone --and some of the rest of us who've missed that are
probably younger, so take comfort!

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the developers were still interested in
optimizations and that your observations, and community opinion about scan
times--is of interest and value to them.

I'd love to know more about what is going on with the real outlyer
cases--hours and hours to scan--perhaps they have large archive collections?
Image backups?
