error opening powerpoint 2003

I am getting an error when trying to open powerpoint 2003.
"Microsoft Office PowerPoint has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Then it askes to restart powerpoint in safe mode. This is not working
either. The same error message appears. Then it says that "Powerpoint failed
to start in safe mode. Would you like to start 'Detect and Repair'?" Doing
this it starts repairing MS Office 2003 and says that it succeeded. But when
starting Powerpoint again (even after rebooting my computer) I get the same
error message and powerpoint is not starting.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? My pc is running under Windows
2000. I installed Office 2003 including the available office updates.

Do you have Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 installed? I would think that the
Office 2003 installer would check that first, but I thought I would ask anyway.

Did this problem occur immediately after installing Office 2003, or were you
able to use PowerPoint for awhile? Does the problem also occur with Word and
Excel?

I checked my windows update page, but it says that there are no updates
available. In the list with installed updates I can only find windows sp3,
but not sp4.

The problem occurred immediately after installing office 2003 professional.
I do not have problems with outlook, word, excell or access. Only powerpoint
is not working.

Sorry, I was wrong. Service Pack 3 is the requirement, so you are okay there.

Because this occurred immediately upon installation, I would recommend that you
put the Office 2003 installation CD in your drive and run setup.exe. A menu
will present itself and you should select "Reinstall or Repair". On the next
menu that appears, select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation"
and click on the Install button. Allow it to run to completion and then test
PowerPoint to see whether you still have the problem you reported.

Please let us know the results.

I did run "Reinstall and repair" --> Detect and Repair errors in my Office
installation. It said that this was performed succesfully but still
powerpoint did not work. I even uninstalled office 2003 professional,
rebooted and installed it again. I get the same error. All office programs
are working except powerpoint.

At this point I think it's time to turn to Microsoft for help. First, go to
Tools > Options > General and click on the Service Options button. Click on the
Yes button. Then try opening PowerPoint several times. That will send
information to Microsoft that will show up in their database.

One thing I didn't ask is, do you get the standard "PowerPoint encountered an
error and must close. Do you want to send a report?" I suspect that you don't,
but if you do you should always send a report. Sometimes you'll be lucky and
information will be displayed that tells you how you might correct the problem.

If all else fails, call Microsoft. You'll probably be asked for credit card
information, but maybe once they talk to you and hear your story they'll
determine that you shouldn't be charged anything for help.

Contact Microsoft - Support, Sales, Replacement CDs etc.
