error message <windows root>\sytem32\hal.dll

Daughter ran disc cleanup and now I can't boot to windows, say I need to
reinstall a copy of this file <windows root>\sytem32\hal.dll. How do I do
this in windows xp home. I tried to reinstall windows xp using the repair
method, but its says it can't find a previous version of Windows so the only
ption i have is to pressr and fix it that way, but I am lost in this windows
xp.
