Every time I switch PC on I get the message "Can't read from ini file:
ShowSysTrayIcon", once I click OK then another message appears DSL Status
Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close" Options given at
the bottom are Debug, Send Error Report or Don't Send.

Help what does this mean and what should I do

Try some clean boot troubleshooting to identify what's causing the
problem.

Likely you have a corrupted boot routine. Pop your XP boot disk into
your CD ROM and run it. When you reach the menu, select the "repair"
option.

When you get to the menu that lists all the Repair commands, follow
the prompts (I believe it tells you to Esc out of the list, then type
the bootfix command, which ever that is. (I forget the exact
spelling), either bootfix or fixboot.

Reboot.

If you don't boot normally, hit your reset button, boot again, and
allow the CD Rom to run the program.

Next step is when you get there, try to re-install Windows over the
current installation to the same folder.

Hopefully your backups are all current (this is why you are supposed
to keep your backups current, and for those who tell me, "I NEVER back
up! Why would anyone backup?" This is why)

If your system refuses to reinstall Windows over the previous install,

you are likely to have to format and reinstall Windows.

This is where/ why I bought a 2nd hdd, an 80 Gb, and an external hdd
enclosure. You plug it into a usb port.

Backup all your stuff to the external, and when it comes time to
format your C drive, you just turn the external drive OFF.

Once you are up and running again, you restore to C from your external
HDD.

I also just acquired a cable that runs from the back of your IDE drive
to the usb port. Just an adapter cable; in the same box is a power
supply that goes from your hard drive's power connector to your power
wall outlet.

both are good to have for a variety of issues.

Good luck.
