Hi Mark,

A long shot

I've cºpied this posting from tinkeÑbell:

Hi

i have found this problem happens when some updates or antivirus are
installed and is easly fixed.

click on start
click on control panel (must be in classic view in control panel in vista)
double click on administrative tools
double click on services
scroll down and you will see windows defender under startup type this will
proberly say manual
right click on this and select properties
under the general tap you will see startup type, from the drop down menu
select automatic, click apply
click ok, close down services and control panel by clicking on the x top
right hand corner
restart your computer.

hope this helps all with the same problem

Bill,

If you refer to the thread between myself and Engel, that should explain how
I go t Windows Defender re-downloaded.

Sorry - I've looked over the thread again, and still don't understand. For
Vista, you can download definitions and engine updates, but not Windows
Defender itself.

If the defender services are set to automatic start, the solution I'd try
would be

sfc /scannow

at an elevated command prompt.

(I.e. right click command prompt and choose run as administrator)

Your reference to re-downloading Windows Defender leaves me confused.

In Vista, Windows Defender is part of the OS, and cannot be removed. So
I'm
lost about what is happening if you re-download Windows Defender.

I've turned on to auto from manual windows defender as you suggested. When I
select windows defender from the start menu it still ask to be turned on.
I'm afraid to turn it on for every time I do I get the error message. in the
past to fix the problem I did a system restore to an earlier version. didn't
occur to me use msconfig to turn windows defender off in the start up.

do you think all is fixed now that I've turned defender on to automatic?

Ron
