Error Loading Config

On this Windows XP Home computer, after desktop icons load on bootup,
the next thing I see is a window reading: "Error loading config.
Unrecognized version! Defaults will be used". When I click "OK" in that
window, another opens reading: "Error in file. ***default***". When I click
"OK" the error windows go away and the machine performs as it should. Using
msconfig, I disabled system.ini, win.ini and all startup items. The error
messages did not appear on the next bootup. I enabled system.ini, then
win.ini and still no error messages. They reappeared when I enabled the
startup items, so it's one of them causing the errors, but which one?
Does this error look familiar to anyone?
