Error \Device\Harddisk3\D - which harddisk is this?

W

Wil Stark

I'm getting errors in my event log for \Device\Harddisk3\D. I cannot
determine which harddisk this is. The machine has a SATA RAID0 (two
physical drives), plus two more IDE drives on the primary IDE channel, plus
a CD-RW and DVD-RW as the two IDE drives on the secondary channel. Drive
"D:" is the DVD-RW. I'm pretty sure that the drive I'm looking for must be
one of the hard disks, since that's what the error says and I wasn't using
the cd or dvd when the errors were being logged.

I've tried poking around in the Disk Management and drive properties, but
nowhere can I find a device identified by "\Device\Harddisk3\D". Help!

Thanks,
- Wil

Start, Run (Type) Diskmgmt.Msc [Enter]
The MMC snap-in will show the disk mapping by numeral.

Missed your last paragraph - Pardon the repetition.

Yes, I'm familiar with the disk management MMC snap-in. That is what I was
referring to when I said "Disk Management". Where exactly should I look?
The harddisks that are enumerated for me in the lower pane are Disk0, Disk1,
and Disk2. Disk0 is the primary IDE drive, Disk1 is the secondary IDE
drive, and Disk2 is the RAID. There is no disk 3.

Thanks,
Wil

What is the err.event/msg?

Errors in Sata/Raid drives may not be reported correctly.
If the err seems to indicate a hd problem, visit the sata hd manu.site they
should have a checking tool capable of detecting errors on sata drives.
Likewise obtain a checking utility for your ide hd's

I take it your aware that raid 0 has no redundancy
Disk management will only show a single drive for a raid array.
Disk3 is 'likely' to be a raid disk, but which one of the two........?

The error description reads:
"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\D.
Fore more information, see Help and Support Center... blah blah blah..."

Type: Error, Event ID: 11, Source: Disk, Category: None.

Sorry, I get RAID 0 and 1 confused. I'm running a RAID mirror (guess that's
RAID 1).

If you think I can assume that the drive is one of the RAID drives, then I'm
not so worried, due to the redundancy. If it's one of the other drives,
then now is the time to back up, I guess....
Thanks,
Wil

Dont rely on mirror raid, leastways on a mobo.
I have experience of a mirrored drive failing, On breaking the mirror and
using the 'good' drive 2 months of data was missing.
The raid utilities gave no indication of any problem, All logs were clear.
The only indication of the initial hd failure was when a couple of apps
started missbehaving.
As there were full backups, no data was lost.
I went from onboard raid to a high specific card for $390

What is the advantage of a high advantage card over a lower priced card?

harddisk3 error

Harddisk3 is your USB pen drive, or a plug & play drive. Well, that's what Harddisk3 is on my computer. I have a different problem with Windows 7 64bit, but the same error as you. When I go to plug in my USB pen drive into my front USB receptacle, as soon as the metal plug of my pen drive touches the metal of the female USB receptacle on my PC's front panel, it crashes my system and the only thing I can do is to push the cold boot/ reset button & reboot. Could it be static electricity? I've never had this kind of problem before. Or could it be a hard-disk controller issue? I think I read that somewhere. All my drivers seem to be ok under device manager. Oh yeah, the reason why you cannot find the drive in the disk management console, is because when you remove your pen drive, it disappears.
