error code 1311, Canon Pro 1 digital camera software

Canon support referred me to Install Shield.

Install Shield has no "customer support" for end-users,
only "paid" customer support for developers.

I tried MSDN.

MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/library/en-
us/msi/setup/windows_installer_error_messages.asp
only has "Windows Installer errors have an error code of
1000 or greater. The error codes numbered 1000 to 1999
are ship errors and must be authored into the Error
table."

"ship errors"

I have SP1 installed, and all updates as per
recommendation in "knowledge base". I did try "retry" of
course.

I tried copying the entire "stuff" to the hard drive, and
installing from there, if the cab file was not
being "seen" in the CD E-drive.

I tried every install, "easy" "custom" and I tried to
install the Canon Pro 1 digital camera as well as the
Canon A80 digital camera software ..all with the
identical result, the installer does not "see" the
english cab file: E:\SOFTWARE\PSWITCH\ENGLISH\Data1.cab
file.

Naturally, I "verified" the file is there, and, that is
the correct path.

And, I did try the Run command.

Pretty good, for an "end-user".

Canon is no help.

Clearly, Canon does not take responsibility for
their "Installer for Solution Disk, Canon, Inc. File
version 5.0.0.4 date created 11/27/2003 4:45PM size 68.0
KB".

These cameras cost big buck$.

Freeware, shareware, paid software install nicely.

"Feature transfer error -1601 Fatal error during
installation.

Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more
information."

The only thing I haven't done is consult Windows
Installer Help (Msi.chm).

Search doesn't "see" Msi.chm on my Fujitsu P2040 computer
notebook.

HELP ! HELP !

I am caught in a loop and I don't know how to get out !

Then don't install the Canon software. Use a cardreader to transfer your
pictures instead. Cardreaders are inexpensive (mine was around $30usd),
most require no drivers in XP (mine is just seen as a removable drive),
and you don't need your camera on, wasting battery life, while working
with the images.

Malke,

I have never had good success with the USB connection,
either 1.0 or 2.0 (the computer notebook has both) USB
connection, in XP Pro.

I have purchased an Lexmar external media card reader,
and not cheap at the price, because it would not
be "seen" either.

I know this sounds like I have screwed up something, by
dinking around, but really, this computer notebook has a
fresh factory image DISE restore feature.

I have heard there was a few years USB "cards" didn't get
enough voltage to the USB, whatever.

At any rate, this computer notebook USB
connections "Fail" PC Doctor.

I do have Photoshop Elements 2.0 ..and it occurred to me
I could find the camera with that application, but the
packing information that ships with the cameras
explicitly warns: DO NOT connect the camera without
installing the software first.

I know this question title makes it appear my question is
about Canon software, but my question is about the
Install Shield software error code.

Maybe this "quest" is "hopeless".

I hope for your sake that it is not hopeless, but unfortunately I don't
have an answer for you. I've never had any problems with usb cards, so
maybe your laptop's ports are bad. Perhaps it is new enough to get some
help from the laptop mftr. I'm sorry I was unable to help you.

Good luck,

Malke
