Canon S100 digital camera won't install

E

Eduardo Pietri

I had the camera installed and working fine, until my system crashed.

I performed a clean installed of Win XP plus added SP1. I installed all the
applications
again (a lot of them!) The only thing that now does not install is the
Canon S100 Digital camera.

I downloaded the latest driver from Canon (WIA USB ver 3.9.10) and the
Device Manager shows it installed, but with a yellow exclamation mark next
to the device. The device is not recognized by the Canon software.

I have a USB 2.0 memory drive and it is working fine in both USB ports. I
suspect this is a Win XP issue and not necessarily a Canon issue. I have
uninstalled and installed it several times with the same results.

I have another Win XP and the camera works fine in that machine. It has Win
XP SP1 installed as well.

Any idea?

Hi Eduardo,
I talked to a friend of mine who is the manager of a local excellent camera
store and he had not heard of too many problems with the Canon with the SP1
update. He said that about 20% of his customers had to reinstall the Canon
software for everything to work. A few of them also had to do a manual
search as there were a couple .DLL's the install did not update. He is
checking to see if he can find those. The person that found them was looking
in the Registry and found the Canon references even after all the Canon
software had been removed. He changed the register, deleted the two DLL's
and all worked out fine. He also asked if you had the two updates below.
Other then that, that is all I have heard about this one.

PowerShot SD100 DIGITAL ELPH Firmware Update

ZoomBrowser EX 4.5.1a Update

One question for you. I have a Nikon CoolPix 990 (3.2 MP) that has about the
same specs as yours, but yours is much smaller. How do you like your camera
? I was looking at some of the sample photos on the web page and printed
them out and even enlarged them to 8X10 and the one stayed perfectly clear
with much brighter colors then I can get. The sample is below. Can you
actually get photos this sharp from your camera ? I know alot of times the
sample ones seem to good to be true, but my friend at the camera store did
comment that the Canon S-100 could turn out photos that would equal a good 5
MP Camera.

Thanks alot and hope your problem get worked out, if I come up with anything
else, I will post it here for you.

If you have an VIA chipset with a AMD processor, not Pentium or Celeron, you might need the USB driver contained in the Hyperion upgrade. Type "hyperion drivers" at google.com.

My hard disk had too many bad sectors and I tried to restore but Windows
wouldn't do it.

Tedd,

Thanks for the response. I think you are in the right track here. Let me
know if you find out which are those files that don't get updated. I was
surprised that even when I go back to the original piece of software (the
way it was working before) the camera still does not install. I suspected
that there was something left behind in the.

I have the latest EX 4.5.1a update, but not the firmware. I'll try the
firmware and see if it makes any difference. I'll get it from Canon, mine
is S100 (different to the SD100 you included below.)

I took a look at the sample you included and mine does not produce pictures
this sharp. Mine is 2.1 MP and most of the time I take pictures in the
medium setting, not the highest quality setting. But the ones I have taken
in the highest setting are not as sharp as the sample you included. The
only thing I don't like about this model is the grip. Given the small size
and that there is no defined groove or something to anchor your finger to,
your hand gets tired after a while holding the camera in one hand waiting
for the next opportunity for the next picture.

Thanks, I do have a Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz.

I kept looking in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for the message that the
Device Manager was giving: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in
memory. (Code 38)".

Found out that Win XP does not support 2 "scanners" at the same time, even
though the camera is not a scanner, XP sees it as such. I disconnected my
scanner and the camera installed fine.

It is really surprising because I've had the scanner connected before as
well and the camera was working fine. The thing is that I usually unplug it
(it does not have an ON/OFF switch), but for whatever reason I had not
unplugged it in a few days. I guess that coincidentaly, every time that I
downloaded pictures from my camera in the last 2 years I did not have the
scanner plugged in (or ON.)

Attached is the link to the Microsoft solution (I couldn't figure out how to
create a link here.)

Glad that you got it working Eduardo !
A camera is a scanner ? Yikes that is one of the stranger ones I have heard.
Come to think of it, I never have had my scanner on at thee same time as the
camera. Actually since I got a digital camera, I do not think I have even
used the scanner.

I will have to check the install on both my camera and my card reader as I
guess that could be called a "scanner" also, but does show up as a separate
drive.
Thanks for the update !

This not correct. My scanner is plugged in and on all the time,
and I have no problem connecting my camera.

Are you saying that Article 324756 is not accurate? I couldn't believe it
either and I don't recall if I had at some point my scanner and camera on at
the same time in the past, but it does sound too much of a coincidence.

My camera and scanner both use a TWAIN driver, which makes it consistent
with Article 324756 that both cannot coexist at the same time. Since I
don't have the camera connected at all times--and I disconnect the scanner
every time I am not using it--this is no big deal, but it does sound
strange.

Anyhow, for the time being my machine is working consistent with article
324756, except that I don't have to restart. It is sufficient to disconnect
one device and connect the other. After the drivers are installed, Windows
will see it immediately after I plug it back in.

No, I'm not. That article says "you may not be able to install
multiple Universal Serial Bus (USB) scanners in Windows XP and
use them simultaneously." It says nothing about a camera and a
scanner.

I couldn't
believe it either and I don't recall if I had at some point my

too much of a coincidence.

Well, that's your interpretation of the article. It certainly
doesn't say that.

All I can say is that it works fine here.

As one of the previous responses says, if your camera uses a TWAIN driver,
then Windows XP will treat them as "sacanners". Since my camera uses a
TWAIN driver, then the article and me are correct. Windows XP will NOT work
properly with 2 TWAIN driver devices connected at the same time. I suspect
that your camera does not use a TWAIN driver.
