error 80070422 on scan/update -won't run!!

xp pro sp2, old beta 1 worked fine. had adaware pro but uninstalled, have CA
etrust AV, disabled during install, rebooted etc...
beta 2 installs without incident, but tray has ! splat, and when try update
def's get msg 80070422 - defender can't start either service disabled or no
enabled devices associated with it. Ugggh! and beta 1 is nowhere to be
found!! un/reinstalled 2x and same message.

I've found that this error is caused when the Automatic Updates services is disabled. Re-enabling and setting to automatic, then re-running the definition download seemed to work fine for me! Good Luck
