Error 0x80072efd on attempt to update signature

Nick Payne

Just installed Defender beta 2 on WinXP SP2. When I click on the update
button in the app window, it eventually pops up a msg in the system tray
saying that the update failed with error 0x80072efd.

I was able to go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and successfully download
and install the signature update. Nothing in the system or application error
logs to indicate why the app failed to update itself initially.

There may be more details about the original error in the windowsupdate.log
file in the \windows folder.

However, you may have cured the issue with the update via Windows Update.

Updates within Windows Defender go via AutoUpdate.

If you do another check--via a help, about, check for updates--do you still
see the same error?

I too get this error. I have followed the instructions to delete the
signature file, but when I restart defender, click on update, nothing happens
for ages then the yellow box comes up off the systray with this error. I
haven't gone via Windows Update, so my definitions are not updated. Any
advice please?

I've learned a good bit more about 0x80072efd since that message. This
error typically indicates a proxy or firewall issue--in fact, there's a KB
article on it--which came out after the thread you are replying to was
written:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us

See if this helps you--let me know.
