Error 0x80040900 server name not found

If I start up Outlook 2003, Outlook starts to dial up (if I am not
connected to the internet already) and immediately tries to
send/receive mail. Sending is succesfull (perhaps because there is
nothing to send), but receiving always fails with the 0x80040900 error
message (server name not found etc.)
It appears as if outlook tries to get the mail before the connection
is completed (Sometimes the connection dialog box is still open as the
error message appears)
If I am already connected to the internet before starting Outlook,
everything functions OK.

Any ideas?

Note: I do use ADSL (LAN connection)

What happens if you wait for the connection to be completed and then press
"Send/Receive"? Does it work then?

Yes, pressing the Send/Receive works correctly.

I have also tried it with FireWall (ZoneAlarm) and Virusscan (Norton)
disabled, but the problem persists.
I don't get any error when starting up Internet Explorer while I am
off line.

Guess I'm a bit confused - I thought that ADSL/LAN connections were always
on. Why does Outlook need to dial it?

When I start up my computer I am not by default on line. I first need to
create a connection to the internet. I can achieve this by explicitly
creating the connection or by starting IE or Outlook. The word "dial up" is
a bit confusing, because I am not actually dialing but creating a
connection.
I could create the connection on start-up of the computer, but I then have
to make sure my ADSL modem is switched on from start up.
Anyway, I haven't seen the problem I am reporting before, when I used
Outlook Express.

I did have a prior problem with Outlook 2003 though, where it refused to
create a connection on start up of outlook. I could solve this problem by
recreating my account (which seems to be the common solution for this kind
of problem)

Sort of. They can be, but don't have to be. They're always on to the DSL
modem, but you can have a dynamic connection if your "Network Connections"
control panel applet that requires you make an explicit connection to the
modem or hub before traffic flows.

Hi.. I was just reading this while researching the same error for a user I work tech support for.

Its not a dialup connection. Probably PPPoE or oA set up on the PC instead of in a routed modem. I've seen it before(I hate setting it up, but sometimes, that's the way it goes)
