'The server name you entered can not be found on the network'

I am using OL2003 on an XP Pro machine (CA AV, LAN, Cable Modem, Router but
no software Firewall). I occasionally get following the message when trying
to send/receive mail from my ISP.

'The server name you entered can not be found on the network

"Task _________ - Receiving reported error (0x80040900): The server you
entered cannot be found on the network (it might be down temporarily).
Please confirm you are online and that the server name is correct."

At least this last time, we were able to ping the isp. What is the problem?
Can someone help?

Your post indicates that you may not have been able to ping your ISP on previous attempts. What does your ISP say about intermittent problems they may be having?

Thanks Milly. When I asked them (via email) this question, they did not
answer it. Instead they suggested that I rebuild my email account in OL. I
tried this and it seems to have fixed the problem. I will only know if time
goes by without another similar error message.
Thanks again.

I have a similar problem. The error code is different (0x800408FC in my
case), but the rest of the text of the message is identical.

Outlook 2003, XP Pro SP2
Using SMTP and POP3 only

I've tried the following, without success:
* replace server names with IP addresses
* remove and re-create the email accounts
* remove the old and create a new Outlook.pst file
* uninstall and re-install Office 2003

Sending email via SMTP works fine (same server as POP3). Using the "Test
Account Settings..." button results in "success", and I can see the traffic
in Ethereal. When actually trying a send/receive operation, *no* network
traffic is observed.

Outlook Express, with the same account settings, also works fine (both SMTP
and POP3).

At present, I'm stuck with retrieving email in Outlook Express, sending via
Outlook 2003.
