Epson & Umax driver problems

Epson Stylus Color 740 - USB. I've moved this to my new WinXP machine. Got
the latest drivers from the Epson site (including the latest Status Monitor
from the US site that the UK site doesn't tell you about). The driver works
fine but the Status Monitor cannot find the printer. Why?
I also have Epson Color 740 ESC/P 2 showing in the list of printers. What's
this.

Umax Astra 2000U - USB Whatever I do this just picks up the Windows driver.
How can I force it to use the Umax driver (Vistascan) ? I've tried just
about every combination of uninstall/reinstall/reboot hardware/software and
just get the same result.

Any ideas gratefully accepted,

Did you install the drivers for the devices before connecting them to the
PC?

I'm not sure which order I did it first time. However, I have uninstalled
the scanner & drivers, rebooted, installed drivers, rebooted, then installed
the scanner and still it only finds the Windows driver.

There must be a registry tweak to point it in the right direction.

The other odd thing I have noticed is that if I unplug the scanner it is
lost from Device Manager and reappears a few seconds after replugging, i.e.
P&P sees it coming and going every time.

The same thing does not happen with the printer. Once installed Device
Manager continues to record it even if it is unplugged.
