Enabling JAVA applets does not enable them

Pretty much as per subject line I guess.

My friend has enabled JAVA applets (and the other 2 options under
'scripting') but still cannot use JAVA. She tried to enter Yahoo chat
and the chat window didn't open. A Yahoo error message said that her
computer doesn't support JAVA.

Brand new pc with OEM installation of XP (one week old).

TIA

you might want to await for more informed replies. I have no idea if the
following tempts experimentation.

I see references to java in the security tab where you made scripting
settings: see "Microsoft VM, java permissions". make note of your current
radio button setting. notice you can chose "custom" radio button, and a new
button appears at bottom of box, "java custom settings"

also internet options is the advanced tab leftover from ie5. there is
mention of java there.

and.. one more... :)
on the internet options is "general" tab.
halfway down "settings.." button, new dialog. "view objects" usually shows
java environment are damaged :)

I've never bother fixing the supposed "damage" :)

A new XP installation would likely *not* have Java. Check here:

I've got the same problem. Looks like Java is enabled,
but I get pages saying I need a Java enabled browser.
Came w/ new purchase of XP Home Edition (appx early Nov)
It originally worked, but now doesn't. Have downloaded
some updates since then, so it may be a bug w/ one of the
SPs.

Thanks for all responces. It was "New installation = no VM" and
installing VM fixed it.

Cheers!
