EMF woes!

C

Chemical Pete

I am a Presentation Designer. I have generated a large
medical clipart library of our own, and save everything
in both AI and EMF file formats. I use EMF for
Powerpoint so that we can ungroup and further modify the
clipart within Powerpoint. I recently upgraded to Office
2003 Pro, and now when I insert the EMF files, there is a
red "X" in the upper corner along with the words Adobe
Systems. The image will not display correcly until
ungrouped. I have checked, and the EMFs are not file
associated with any Adobe products. What else could be
causing this problem. This happens on several
workstations.

I appreciate all of your time and consideration in this
matter and look forward to a quick resolution from the
Microsoft Gurus!

Regards,
Chemical Pete

Do the EMF files have an EMF file extension?

Can you email me a small one along with an explanation of how you created it?
I'd like to have a look. Thanks!

Followup: Pete sent me a couple of sample EMFs.

The fun just never ends: both imported as blanks that couldn't be ungrouped in
my earlier version of PPT (2000) in this case, but worked just fine in 2003.

I didn't see the "Adobe Systems" stamp in the corner of either (nor did I get
the red x) but Pete sent me a screenshot, so I can see what he got.

I've asked whether he's got multiple versions of PPT/Office apps installed on
the theory that maybe mixed graphics filters are the cause of the problem.

"MS Win Update KB835732 causes problems with Illustrator
EMF display in Office"

You cannot view enhanced metafile format graphics files
(or EMF image files) that were created in Adobe Illustrator

//support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;840997

And I copy from:

Author: Eric Schwartz (at adobeforums)

BEWARE:

The problem still exists if you send the PPT to anyone
else that has NOT uninstalled that security patch -- they
too will have the problem with your file! In other words,
the file is independent of the computer and so you can't
guarantee that the file will display and print correctly
on other PCs.

There are two workarounds:

1) Convert the graphics to transparent PNG files.

2) Or, if the graphic is fairly simple (no drop shadows,
complex clipping paths, etc.), you can convert the EMF to
a Microsoft Picture within PowerPoint by right-clicking
the placed metafile and choose Edit Picture. A side
benefit for this procedure is that it will dramatically
improve the look on screen by anti-aliasing the curves,
which may be very important for slideshows. It has no
effect on printing (prints the same either way).

<End>

Wishing that this may help...

I don't think so. As I mentioned (we're bouncing back and forth between here
and email, folks. Don't try to watch this too closely without protective
eyewear and a neck brace) I don't have EMFimp.flt in my Office 2003
installation either, yet the same files imported fine there.

Interesting sidelight: our buddy the skeleton (one of the test files) imported
into Corel Draw 11 but looked very different than what imported into PPT and in
poking at it a bit there, it seems to me that some of the component shapes are
corrupt or at least very oddly constructed. I've seen this kind of oddity from
Illustrator before. I wonder if that's not at the root of the problem.

When I imported the original source CGM into Draw it looked correct, so I
exported it back to a new EMF and that one opened/ungrouped w/o problems in
PPT2000 here, which hadn't been able to cope with the Illustrator-exported
version.

I'll email you a copy of the new EMF to try on.

The good news is that EMF's created from CorelDraw work
just fine!!! They ungroup just as they should, and work
flawlessly! That begs the question, "why does
Illustrator have such an issue with this!?!?!"
and, "Will it ever be corrected?"

Response to note below from Steve:

Hi again, Pete,

Have a peek at the newsgroup (makes more sense to follow
this up there); I mentioned taking the original CGM
through CorelDraw to EMF - I've attached the result here.

Could you give the attached file a go in PPT 2003 to see
how it fares?

Adobe and Microsoft stuff normally don't work too well together - Corel does
make sure that its output is compatible with Microsoft applications.

Pete:

I run into the same issues from time to time. I tend to
do more elaborate drawing in Freehand over Illustrator
though and it seems to interface w/ ppt a bit better.

FWIW, according to the info on Adobe's site, the newest
version of their programs (Creative Suite) is supposed to
have "Tighter Integration with Microsoft Office"...with a
a "Save For Microsoft Office" command that "saves your
graphics in a format that gives you great-looking results
every time. Whether you're working on a Windows or Mac
OS, this new option saves you time by ensuring your
artwork displays and prints beautifully when viewed in
Microsoft Office documents."

I'm not sure if this actually works yet. My IS department
has a copy of CS for me but it hasn't been installed just
yet.

Maybe this could be an option for you assuming that it
works??

Hello,

Have you installed the MS04-011 Security Update for
Microsoft Windows?

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=835732

If so, you are running into a known problem introduced by
this security
update. The good news is that there is a Windows hotfix
that addresses it:

Wellawella ... why dincha tell me you were a Corel Drawer? ;-)
Glad that's got it sorted.

Heck, with Draw and a bit of prodding with VBA, you could probably rig up a way
of batch converting whole folders full of your CGMs to EMF.
