Embedded fonts not displaying correctly

We are testing Office 2007 at our company and we have seen an issue where a
PowerPoint file from a client uses a custom embedded font. The font loads and
displays fine on some machines but not others.

On other machines the font seems OK but the bullet points for the font give
goofy characters like n's with ~ over them. If you select the text on the
problem machines and push the bullet point button on the ribbon then the
bullet points look fine. As soon as you save the document and re-open it on
that machine the bullet points are messed up again. All machines have the
same default Office 2007 settings, Office 2007 was installed on top of Office
2003 and replaced 2003.

Any ideas?

Make sure the problem machines have a certified printer driver installed and
set as the default printer. My guess is the "okay" machines have that, but
the problem machines don't.

My understanding is that the drivers that ship with the various flavors of
Windows are certified, and you can see a list of more on the Windows
Marketplace. So, for example, if you look here...

somewhere else and thought I would try it. Any other suggestions?

Hm. Do you know if the client chose to embed the font with just characters
in use or if they opted for the "entire font" option?

Out of curiosity, what printer driver is installed / default on the

I don't know if the client embedded just the character or the entire font. I
do know that this file opens up on most other machines in our company just
fine. All machines in this department have a HP 8100 as their default
printer. I believe it is the PS version of the print driver as well.

The strange thing is I can manually click on the bullet points on the

It is strange.

I'd check to see if embedding the whole font set helps.

I'd also see if changing to the PCL6 version of the printer driver helps. (I
see that one listed on both WinXP and Vista.) Not sure if it will, but
probably worth a shot. The printer drivers are local, not on a network,
right?

Now, the whole thing about saving and reopening is interesting, too. There's
a bug in PPT 2002 and 2003 where PPT reapplies the master slide settings
after you save a file, so any manual formatting you did to the text goes
away. (Like, maybe you make the text smaller, but when you save the file,
the text jumps back to its original size.) PPT 2007 handles masters and
placeholders differently, so I don't think that's still a problem. Hmmmmmm.
If you go to the slide master and check the bullets and numbering on the
placeholder there, what's it set to? Does it specify the custom font?
