DVD-RW...making it write

R

Roln

Just bought a Sony DW-22A DVD-RW (OEM-no software)

What do I need to make it write to blank disks?
I understand WinXP does not support DVD drives for writing.

I want to use it the same way I use my CD writer. Copy and paste
or drag and drop or send to, files for writing to a disk.

use nero or other cd/dvd writing software - buy legal version or search the
net for illegal ones...if you don't have problems with that...

Since Windows XP has no native DVD recording capability,
you'll need to purchase a third-party program, such as NERO.

You'll need 3rd party software to do what you want. But, from what I understand, your DVD burner can still burn CDs, since they act as both CDR-RWs, and DVD writers.

Daniel,

I have a copy of Nero, WinDVD, DVD Creator and others, but didn't want to
install them.
Reason is, they have too much other stuff included, I won't use.

Carey,

I have a copy of Nero 6.6 and several other programs, but don't want to
install them
because they have too many other features I won't use.

Tom,

I tried something like that the other day, and for some unknown reason, it
wouldn't work. I'll try it again.

:.

Yves,
I did not buy the "kit", I bought the OEM version, which does not include
stupid software.

As with the other posts, Micorsoft does not let you write DVDs with the
built-in CD tools for XP. You will need to install Nero 6.6 in order to
write DVDs. And you will also need to install a DVD player, since Windows
Media Player may not directly support DVDs.

Do not forget to update the applications, since they may have updates to
enable features that your drive has.

OEM version are supposed to be delivered with an OEM software which allows
you the "bare-minimum" DVD creation. If you did not receive this, the OEM
kit is incomplete.

Wrong again. If you buy an OEM piece of hardware, the chances are good that
it will come with nothing.

So you have the software you need, but you don't want to use it. Are you
looking for a supernatural solution?

Correct. Always check with the seller to ensure it comes with everything
you want, prior to purchasing, especially with online stores.

Then only install only the features you want to use!

Likely all you want is InCD from Nero and Nero Express.

The inbuilt Windows burning CD software won't support writing to DVD,
just use Nero or whatever came with your DVD writer.

You'll need decoder software or a hardware decoder card (PCI card) to make
the DVD player play DVD's.

Software such as PowerDVD or others out there. (this should have been
bundled with the drive along with Nero or similar).

Why did you bother buying the programs? They're of no use to anyone,
until/unless installed. Nor is the DVD-RW device, which needs at least one
of them to acheive objective originally posted (write DVD's ?). Does your
obvious aversion to installing software extend to NOT going to the site to
download/install XP drivers for the DVD-RW device, too? (you said, no
software with device - to say the least, unusual).

Most programs give users a choice to install "recommended" (default)
elements, or a "custom" installation where the user selects which elements
he needs, and just install those. I strongly recommend you insatll and
choose the default option.

I can't resist this. Your two posts combined equate to buying a car,
refusing to put petrol in it, then asking for help to make it go. Both
scenarios UNBELIEVABLE! Nevertheless, you've now got good advice, please
take it.

Sincerely, Len.
