during wipe/reinstall, setup cannot find QUICK.IME

i am wiping my hp laptop and reinstalling windows with the setup disc that
came with the laptop. during setup, i get the following error:

"setup cannot copy the file QUICK.IME. ensure that the disk labeled WINDOWS
XP PROFESSIONAL SERVICE PACK 2 CD is in the drive selected below or provide
the location where the files can be found."

naturally, the cd *is* in the drive selected. where can i find a copy of
this file so that i can provide it on a jumpdrive to the screwy setup
application?

Did you try the install again ? If so, did it fail on the same file ?

Sounds like you are doing an inplace install and the process cannot find the
file. It might be on OEM restore CD or partition. Skipping the file should
not harm anything. If you want a clean install use the OEM restore disk but
remember you will lose everything on your drive.

the install didn't fix my original problem, (i suspect the install did not
finish, but i don't know how i could have prevented it from messing up), so i
am in the process of installing again.

meanwhile, there was a second file it couldn't find, whose name i did not
write down, and a third, qasf.dll that it could not find and warned me
windows might not work properly without.

I only asked because I had an issue one time installing windows. It would
start copying files, then the first time it couldn't find a file on the CD
it was Explorer.exe. So I cancelled, started the install over again, but
the next time it whizzed right by explorer.exe no problem, but then failed
on a different file. Skipping this time, it failed on a couple more files.

So I started the install again, which resulted in different files it
couldn't find. I narrowed the problem down to a bad stick of RAM. When I
removed that stick, the install went smooth with no problems.
