Duplicate File entries

I have just replaced WinME with a clean install of XP Home.
I have always kept my data on a separate hard drive so I pointed XP to
look to that drive for "My Documents", and made it the default folder
for MS Office applications to save files.
I have not used XP before and if I do a search for specific files
Explorer returns 2 or more identical entries for the same file. The file
properties on all entries are identical, same directory, date and time,
file size etc.
When I try to open a *.xls file from My Documents, Excel always
complains that I can't open 2 copies of the same file at once, and then
opens the file.
Using Windows Explorer I see I have "My Documents" in the Desktop and
"Stephen's Documents" in My Computer. The former is a system folder and
the latter a file folder. The contents of the 2 folders are identical
including all the files that pre-existed the XP installation.
I am the only user of the PC and no other accounts exist.
I am not asked to logon when windows boots.
What has caused this and can I delete the "Stephen's Documents" folder
that presumably XP created during installation, or will that delete all
my files?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I have a similar problem. When I do a search in My Documents, I get three
identical copies of the file. If I delete one of the copies, they all are
deleted. I don't understand it. If anyone has answers, let me know

I'm posting not an answer, but a similar problem. Under XP Home, I
tried to move the My Music file to a newly installed slave drive. Now I
have three My Music folders: one on the master drive's desktop, one
associated with my user name, and one on the slave drive. Any change to
any one changes all three. And XP says that each folder is taking up 28
gigs of disk space -- why I thought I needed a second drive in the
first place. I am the only user of the computer. How do I get back to a
single folder with 28 gigs of music rather than three folders taking up
84 gigs?

I put "My Documents" folder on storage drives and then add any folders I
like within it...ie "Music" maybe this is better for you as well.
To add "My Documents" folder to new drive...R.click on "My Documents"
folder/ properties and move it to new drive in the "Target" field.

Hope this helps
