Change Location of My Documents

How do I get Windows to recognize a new location for my "My Documents"
folder?
How do I redirect all programs to the new location?

I want to keep the My Documents folder on an external hard drive. Windows
wants it in my Documents and Settings folder.
To 'save' a file, I must always check to see if it is going to my new
location instead of the one assigned by Windows.
Programs, that automatically make a folder in My Documents and store files
there, do not recognize my new location and make a new folder every time I
delete the old one.

FYI: The new location is an external hard drive. OS=Windows XP SP2. No
other 'My Document" users on this computer.

Any help is appreciated.

Right-click on "My Documents" choose Properties and click on "Move". It's as
simple as that.
