Duplicate computer name

I have a problem with my computer name. I had an advent computer downstairs
which I called Advent downstairs. When I got a new computer I moved Advent
upsatirs and renamed it accordingly. My new computer is Packard Bell
downstairs but the network thinks it is Advent downstairs and gives
aduplicate name warning. I have tried changing the name in my computer
properties and it seems to accept this but when I do a Packard Bell system
check it says the computer is Advent. Is this anything to do with the fact
that the Advent was the internet connecting computer and now Packard Bell is?
Is there anywhere else I can change the name of the computer?

From XP's help:
The computer name is limited to fifteen characters and cannot contain
spaces or any of the following special characters:
; : " < > * + = \ | ?

I can change the computer name in system to whatever I want, but although the
computer name screen shows the new name I still get a duplicate name warning.
Could it be because the ip address of the new computer is the same as the old
one was by virtue of being connected directly to the bt broadband modem?

I have solved the duplicate computer name by deleting the old advent in
nethood on the upstairs computer. The only problem I have is how do I change
the system name? This is different from the computer name at the moment.

The computer name and the system name are one and the same. Change the
computer name in Control Panel>System>Computer Name. If you have static
IP's, make sure they are all different. If you have dynamic IP's
assigned by DHCP from a router for instance, rebooting will assign new
ones.

but the sytem name refused to change, but I manged to change the system name
in regedit and things seem to be ok at the moment.

Thank you all for your time

This makes no sense. What "system name" do you mean? Where do you see
this?

Acessories, system tools, system information, user name Advent/sallyanne.

It makes no sense to me either as I never ever told this computer it was
advent. But it is packardbell/sallyanne now.

There is a difference between user name and computer name. The computer
name is changed in Control Panel>System>Computer Name. This will not be
something like "packardbell/sallyanne. This will be one word without a
slash.

User accounts are created in Control Panel>User Accounts. You cannot
change an existing user account by simply renaming it. All the
files/folders will remain in the old user account name. Instead, you
create a new account, log into it once, and then copy over the old user
account settings (if desired) or simply delete the old user account.

Just in case you've also mixed this up, the registered owner (which has
nothing to do with the machine name or user accounts) can be changed
with this fix by MVP Doug Knox:

I think the terms Computer Name and Computer Description are getting confused
here. The actual netbios name (Compuert Name) is lised as the "Full Computer
Name" when you go into the System Applet. YOu could also use that same name
as the description but in terms of netwokring, the description is meaningless.
