Driver won't install properly.

I'll try making a post here, but I'm not optomistic.......

I've seen similar posts, and no one seems to be able to identify what
the cause really is or a good solution from what I've read.

FACTS

I have a T-Mobile MDA which runs Windows Mobile 5.

I have a Dell Latitude C600 now running Windows XP Pro SP2. (upgraded
from W2K Pro)

All updates from Microsoft "Windows Update" installed.

Activesync 4.2.

MDA communicated fine with this computer before the upgrade to XP.

MDA communicates fine with another computer running Windows XP Pro SP2
and Activesync 4.2.

After upgrading to XP, the computer tried to "rediscover" my MDA.
The driver installation failed.

"An error occured during the installation of the Device"

"The name is already in use as either a service name or a service
display name."

I've tried:
Uninstalling Activesync
Uninstalling non-working Windows Mobile-based Device" drivers
Rebooting both my laptop and WM5 device.
Reinstall Activesync 4.2

No luck after trying the above several times.
I can see the device in "My Computer" but when I click on it, a blank
window comes up.
Also, I know when things worked correctly in the past, another network
connection shows up when the device is plugged in.
I am not seeing any additional network connections after I go through
the above process.

I tried several more times, after disabling Symantec Antivirus, Cisco
VPN and Windows Firewall services.

This did not work either.

I've tried all of the above with an IR connection instead of USB.

No luck.

I also looked in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHING/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/

There were no directories which had any title that looked like it may
be related to my Windows Mobile device. (although all the title seem
quite obscure.....)

Every time I try to install the driver for the device, it fails.
There is then an item with a yellow exclaimation point next to it in
Device Manager/Network Adapters.
The name is: "Windows Mobile-based Device #?"
Where "?" increases by one number every time I uninstall and try to
reinstall the driver.

Again, I'm not very optomistic that anyone can solve this issue based
on other postings I have review throughout the internet.

Based on all my previous computer experience, I'm sure re-installing a
fresh copy of Windows on a freshly formatted drive would solve the
problem.

This is not an option, nor should I have to do this........

Any help would be appreciated. (other than telling me to reinstall
Windows)
