I want to download Windows XP SP2 for use on a single computer so that I can
burn it onto a CD as I need it to fix problems with IIS installation.
However, on the update site it only allows you to install it, not download
to burn it onto a CD, unless of course you download the network version
which is elsewhere on the Microsoft site.

Is there a place I can download (without installing) the single PC version
so that I can then burn it to a CD?

Thanks,
Ken

You can download the full version if you want to install it on
a single computer. Keep in mind that the file is 266 MB.
Hopefully, you've got a broadband connection.

Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 2

If downloading the full version is not an option, you might
want to order the CD:

OK, I downloaded the full version. Which of the extracted files in which
folder is the 'SP2' (only) that can I burn to a CD?

Thanks,
Ken

It's one file......Where did you tell it to go?

When you download the full version of SP2 you should end up
with a file named WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe. Burn this
file to a CD. When you want to install Service Pack 2 double
click the file and the installation should start automatically.

If you've extracted the installation files, you can begin the
installation by double clicking the update.exe file in the
I386\update folder. All the installation files must be burned
to a CD if you plan on installing it on another computer.

Good luck

Yes, that's the file I downloaded to my CD burner. No problem thanks to
high speed internet. I clicked it to extract it and it started the
installer. However, I found the temp folder it extracted everything to,
then copied all that to another folder on the hard drive, then I cancelled
the install after I copied all the files.

I thought that this version though was for networks, and that I would only
need one of the extracted files for the SP2 update and not all the other
network files/stuff.

Just wondered which file(s) it was in the haystack, just the update.exe, or
the whole UPDATE folder, or the whole downloaded file?

Thanks,
Ken

If you want to install SP2 from a CD the simplest route is to
burn the file you downloaded to a CD, put the CD in the
computer's CD drive and double click the file. As you've seen,
the installation files will be extracted to a temporary
location and the installation will begin automatically.

Even with the extracted files, it's all or nothing. You'd have
to burn the entire contents of the temp folder to a CD and run
I386\Update\Update.exe to start the installation.

Keep in mind that when you go to the Windows Update site to
install SP2, Windows only downloads the files needed by your
computer. Usually that's less than 100 MB. The full version is
designed to be installed over a network on a variety of
different computer configurations. That's why it's such a large
file. The temp folder ends up being around 326 MB. But it can't
be broken up. The entire Service Pack must be kept intact if
you want the installation to succeed.

Symantics. In this case the word network has nothing to do with the content,
but with the secondary distribution method.

Think corporate. If you wanted to upgrade fifty PCs to SP2 would you want to
have all fifty connect to the internet through a (relatively) slow public
connection, or a (again, relatively) fast local LAN connection.

If you are going to do that you would need all the files in one handy
package to place on some file server or on a portable media.

If you wish you can extract the files to a directory and then burn it to
disk. To do so, open up a command line window by navigating to Start, and
then Run, and typing "cmd" (no quotes); then hit ENTER. Then, using the
following commands, navigate to that folder and extract the files (Note that
the text [ENTER] means hit the ENTER key):
cd \
cd sp2
xpsp2.exe -x:c:\sp2 [ENTER]

an Extracting Files dialog will come up and display the progress. When
finished if you navigate to C:\sp2 with Windows Explorer, you'll see a new
folder called i386 that contains the extracted files. You can then burn this
directory to disc

without saying anything specific, i will tell you that it was on
bittorrent sites a week or so before it was generally available, since
MS decided to be bastards about their 'release schedule'...
