download failing!

Developed a Glitch when downloading files,
whatever it is wherever from, the download starts, then a few seconds
later - "Timed Out" !!!!

IF I fire up FreeDownloadManager to handle the download, and go back
to the same site - it downloads it OK!

I did just complete a Windows Update yesterday, didnt notice anything
weird there, just the usual
security updates, Any Ideas on how I can test the Windows
Downloader ?
what and where IS that anyway ? built into windows - but is it
something I can locate on the Pc? and check/test or anything ?
many thanks...
Stu..

I don't know what you're referring to. As far as I know there is no
"Windows Downloader" included with the OS.

How do you refer to the <?> that fires up when you download an item
from the internet?
and Lets you "Run or Save as...." ?

I'll double check the Win updates anyway.. but don't think it's
that...
another oddity I never had before is with explorer...
I search for whatever I'm looking ofr and open a likely site in a new
tab..
carry on the search and open another likely site i another tab...
very occasionally I'd get a "cannot display the webpage"
probably due to dialup connection! (stop laughing!)
but the cannot connect seems to come up way too often now!!!
guess there could be something going on with the local connection I'm
on ~
annoying!

That's just part of your web browser. You neglect to mention what that
is, but I'll assume it's Microsoft Internet Explorer. There is no
separate "Windows Downloader" program.

I thought I must mention when you say :

" There is no separate "Windows Downloader" program."

....that, *if* the OP has, at some time, installed one, the Internet
Explorer download dialog may have been replaced by any one of many
third-party "download managers" that are widely available, mostly free and
nearly always useless.

A third-part download manager would intercede any time that the default
built-in "Window's download dialog" was called for....

Yes, I forget it's name, but I think it was alliterative.

Getright! Okay, that's not aliterative, but it's meaningful. That's
what I meant, meaningful.

I loved it, because it allowed interruption and resuming later on, and
because it would write a file or append to a master file with a short
description of what I'd dl'd and from where, and I could add to that
with, for example, the info on the webpage, which sometimes is
important.

OTOH, it was a pain to keep those description files up to snuff, and
when I got DSL, interrupting and resuming was much less important.
And I think the Firefox downloader program supports stop/resume if I
need it.

But Getright is still great, and free.

I use Firefox and the Firefox downloader program, and once I used the
Dell downloader which only works with the Dell support webpage iiuc.

Well, farbeit from me to pour scorn on a product I have never tried, it's
just that, IMHE , the ones that I've used have left the resulting
downloaded files corrupted and the whole process useless.

But that was some time ago, so maybe they've got much better of late?

I never had that with Getright**, even when I started and stopped
several times.

I used this from 4 or 5 years ago until 18 months ago.

**How could it have that problem when it's called Get Right! ?

FreeDownloadManager is the best...

but...
getting back to the topic - it's Resolved !!!!

I'v never had a dodgy Windows update before, but having explored just
about all other possibilities..
I restored the PC to as-it-was BEFORE that Win'update was done
( aprox 10 updates in it)
Problem is now GONE !!
Somewhere in the latest batch of Updates there is at least one that's
got something wrong with it!
- I updated on 28th.. but I got the notification
a few days - maybe a week - prior to that - ("updates ready for your
computer") and I do it myself via the web site.
may not effect everyone.. but to sure got me! I don't recall any
failures,
It messed up resulting in Many "internet explorer can't open the web
page"
and ALL attempts to download anything - letting windows / explorer
handle the download,
would "Time-Out after 10 - 20 seconds.
..

I don't know but I do remember now that GetRight had a paid version
that I bought. Not expensive but not as "good" as free.

Glad it's fixed. If it messed me up I don't know. I let the MS
updates go almost autmoatically and use FF for the others. Maybe if
it messed me up it will unmess me some day.
