dos program locks up after switching back from different programs

use xp pro at work - I also have a dos program. No problems using dos
program until I got a new computer. Still using xp pro - but now the dos
program locks up when I go into a different program (i.e. check a website,
instant messanger, etc.) and then back to the dos program - the dos program
will lock up. To get the dos program to run again - have to exit from
program and lose what I have been working on. I have tried adjusting the
idle sensitivity - some success. It may have decreased the number of times
it locks up per day - but problem still there. Goal is to not have the dos
program lock up! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

A few random thoughts:

- try running the program in DOSBox, a free DOS emulator (www.dosbox.com).

- check with the maker of the unnamed program for any hints on how to run
under XP, perhaps e-mail them for assistance - and also check for any new,
*Windows* version of the program they may have produced!

- try changing/playing around with the Compatibility Mode in the
Compatibility tab of the program's shortcut

- check your machine's Event Logs for any clues as to the cause (Start >
Run > type "eventvwr.msc" and press Enter)
