cannot run program in DOS MODE!!!

Please can some one help me out,I dont know what I have done,but eveytime I
try to open or start a program a message this cannot run program in DOS MODE
keeps popping up in Notepad,my desktop menu,all my complete system programs
email etc.I cant seem to get back onto my original settings of Windows XP
home edition,have tried system restore,last known config,copying autoexe.nt
&Config.nt,exit at the command prompt,recovery console,msconfig actions,its
seems as if I am on a whole new setup WIndows NT or something,please help me
I am so frustrated,been trying to work this out for weeks now,thanks alot.

No need. The last version of Windows to be built on DOS was ME.

XP has a command line environment, where commands - including some
carried over from the DOS era - can be executed.

It doesn't have "DOS", but it has a 16-bit VM.
