Don't "stand by" me

I recently upgraded to cable internet and now that I've downloaded a bunch
of new stuff and upgraded a few things my PC won't go into stand by mode.
After I try to get it to go into it, it actually goes into it but then I can
see the hard drive light come on and awake it comes back on. I've started
going backwards by deleting programs and going through many others trying to
figure out if any of the auto update check marks are unchecked. Is there
anything else I should be looking for?

Have a look at your own reply, posted three hours later in a new thread.

|Was there a time when standby worked - and held until you brought computer
into active mode? If you find the "new stuff" that caused the malfunction,
please post identitiy of that thing. For me, standby is a hopeless mess.
I've tried everything.
