Hi

I have an inspiron 6000. I am currently running windows xp home
edition on there. When i want to go to stand by it works. But when i
just leave the laptop running, it just go to the screen saver and stay
there, it never goes to the stand by mode. I did set power management
in the control panel to go to stand by after 30 mins.

Help

Thanks

Make sure your hardware power management is unchecked for "Allow this device
to bring the computer out of standby". Usually your network adapter will
have this feature. You will find this setting in Device Manager, then
looking at the Network adapter properties. Other Hardware /may/ have these
settings as well.

Look in Device Manager, and the Properties for the Keyboard, Mouse, NIC,
UsB ports and the Power Management tab on them.

i checked all of mouse keyboard and sun non of them has a power
management tab except my modem. I unclicked the"allow this device to
bring the computer out of standby" but it still doesn't go to stand
by.

do you guys think is it possible that a software is preventing the
system going into standby?

thanks

I would try to update the Video Card drivers from the manufacturer's web
site. This /may/ solve the issue.

Can your computer successfully enter standby by using the following command?

See if any of the solutions in the following KB articles will help you solve
this mystery.

it mentioned that VGA video card may interference with the comp
entering standby. All it did was mentioning it, and didn't explain
how to resolve it.

It sounds like the exact symptoms of my computer but again, they
didn't offer any solution.

Sorry, I do not what is going on with your system. You could always try
making a schedule tasks to put your system in Stand-by. If I had to do this
then I would create the task like this:

1. Open the Schedule Tasks folder.
2. Right-click in the Schedule Tasks folder to select New > Schedule Task.
3. Name the Schedule Task "Standby"
4. Right-click the Standby Schedule Task to choose Properties.
5. In the Run box of the Scheduled Task enter:

%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState

6. Click on the Schedule tab and select "When Idle" in the drop-down menu.
Configure how long the computer should wait when Idle.
7. Configure any other option you wish and then click "Apply".

Lately in my windows task manager there are alot of programs that is
running and i dont know what they are.

Process Library is a good site.
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/

Type in the process name in the Search field and that should tell you what
the process is. You can the process name under the "Processes" tab in Task
Manager.

Try Process Explorer from Microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

You could also use AutoRuns from Microsoft to disable these programs from
starting up by unchecking the checkmark for the program/process.
