Don't get login prompt to access shared folders across home ntwk

I tried to set up limited file sharing between my MCE 2005 machine and my
wife's XP laptop so she can access the central store of our photos, videos,
and music. Following instructions I found here
(http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/08clientconnect.htm),
I set up an account for my wife on the MCE machine, turned on file sharing
for each of those folders, added her to the list of authorized users, deleted
the Anyone option, and ensured she had Read access only to My Videos, My
Music, and My Pictures folders. The folders show up as shared on her laptop,
but when I try to access them, I get a failure message due to permissions.

I am under the impression that if the login credentials on her laptop do not
match her login credentials on our MCE machine, a login window is supposed to
pop up into which she puts her credentials for the MCE machine. I get no
such window.

Any idea what settings I have to tweak to ensure this login window pops up?

Hey buddy!

work grouping can ge be a real pain the back side! It took me ages just to
perfect Interent Connection Sharing. You have not listed your operation
systems on both computers so this info is in reguards to Windows 2000 pro
(NOT ME) and XP operating systems. You need to create a user account on the
laptop THAT IS IDENTICLE to one on the MCE 2005 computer. Username and
password must be exact. So the laptop will have two user names. By doing
this you should be able to access the shared data on the laptop with no
worries :) Getting the shared rights perfected takes some time. The
addition of XP SP2 makes it a little bit more of a pain in he backside

maybe this will help?

AHHH Where the reset buttConnecon?

The machine with the folders is an XP MCE machine.

The machine attempting to access the folders is a WinXP Pro laptop.

I'm trying to do this without matching up the logins since I am under the
impression it is possible to have the XP MCE machine deny the initial
connection attempt and then present a login screen.

Is this not possible anymore?

Actually, I think I figured it out. I had to configure both the Sharing and
Security tabs for each folder to be shared to recognize my wife's account.
Even though her logon and password are different than what she has on her
laptop, this seems to work. The MCE (Media Center Edition) machine will
reject the initial attempt then provide a login window. When I login with
her credentials, it works.
